AOL Google Deal

The uncertainty and cynicism that have been swirling around the AOL/Google deal are evidently important enough for some high-profile nipping in the bud. Marissa Mayer, the VP of Search Products and User Experience (formerly Director of Consumer Web Products) has posted “trust us” message in the Official Google Blog that clarifies some misconceptions. I can find only three other instances of Marissa Mayer posting on the blog. In this message she reassures everyone that AOL’s partnership with Google will not bias search results in any way, and AOL’s allowance in AdWords does not exempt it from participating in the system’s auction-style competition for placement.

5 Reasons Blogs Don’t Make Money with Adsense

Here are five reasons why many Adsense sites don’t make money.

1) There are no good keywords on the site.
2) The site doesn’t provide a good niche.
3) The site owner doesn’t maintain or update their site.
4) Some website owners don’t provide the full attention to their Adsense sites.
5) Many webmasters have failed to devout time and research to their Adsense site.

Many things are needed to run a successful site that makes money from Adsense. The key though is content. Make the content and the people will come. Develop your niche, and the ads will get clicked. Stop worrying about clicks, and worry about content. Focus, Focus, Focus.

Power of Google’s AdSense Bidding

Adsense rates getting high?

Google recently updated AdWords to allow advertisers to bid separately for AdSense contextual clicks without having to go through a challenging, time-consuming system hack. Many advertisers have been more than willing to buy clicks from Google’s AdSense network. But because those clicks tend to originate from potential customers who are early in the buying cycle, marketers and advertisers prefer to focus budgets on search first, paying a lower price for contextual clicks if budgets and ROI (define) allow. Before, the solution was to clone campaigns and adjust syndication network settings to create a search-only campaign and a search-plus-content campaign.

Google’s latest changes have been well received, and I applaud the company for finally implementing them.

The news gets better. Google has retained the SmartPricing click-discounting system. It was implemented to bring the billed CPC (define) in line with the true estimated click value. When you set your CPCs for the AdGroups, check later to see how close the billed CPCs are to your bid. The greater the difference, the more likely SmartPricing kicked in. The alternative reason for the difference is Google’s Auto Discounter.

Google Stock going up

Did you think that google stock was steeply priced? Well, think again. Google Stock is going up.

Analyst William S Morrison of JMP Securities reiterates his “strong buy” rating on Google Inc. The 12-month target price has been raised from $400 to $575.
In a research note published this morning, the analyst mentions that the company has beaten MSN in the race to enter the branded market, with its acquisition of a 5% stake in AOL. The analyst believes that the underlying value of the AOL business is higher than the $20 billion being reported by the media.
JMP Securities expects AOL to generate $90 million in net revenues for Google this year.

Yahoo Publisher Network versus Google Adsense

We are currently testing both YPN (Yahoo Publisher Network) and Goodle Adwords. We already are familiar with the Adwords, so the new YPN is the one we will focus on.

So far, the Adwords seems more refined in their targeting, but as YPN grows I am sure that will get better.

We will know more soon.

What do you think about either of them?
