Google Calendar API for Use on Your Website

Google opens up Calendar for developers 1 week after opening up Google Calendar to the public.

Google has made an API available for developers to build applications that use Calendar data or update the calendars themselves. Google’s Calendar service was released last week and quickly became an internet favorite. The new API allows developers to benefit from this popularity by building applications using that data.

Using Google’s Google data API (GData) feeds, applications can be created that insert new events, edit or delete existing events, and query for events that match particular criteria.

Google’s suggested ideas include creating a web front end for an in-house group calendar that uses Google Calendar as a back-end, or basing a public Google Calendar on data from an organisation’s internal resources, such as an event database. THis is what we asked for, the ability to use it on our website or church’s website.

Yahoo Launches FareChase Travel Website

Many people were surprised when Yahoo! launched a new travel website, considering the company already has a website called Yahoo! Travel; however, the new Yahoo! FareChase site is a travel search engine and offers much more and does it in a way that saves the user time. Customers can search for the pricing of flights and hotels across multiple travel sites. The search results include some of the airlines’ own websites, which tend to offer some of the cheapest fares.

The Yahoo! FareChase service will also be integrated with Yahoo! Search, so visitors can begin searching for flights and hotels directly from Yahoo! Search. Aspects of the FareChase service will also be integrated into Yahoo! Maps and the Yahoo! Trip Planner. The service will also offer information regarding travel experiences.

So far Yahoo! Farechase works well, and is something I will use.

Google Launches Calendar

Google has launched an online Calendar that works with Gmail and competes directly with Microsoft. The battle is on between the giants.
Google Calendar features:
Calendar Sharing: Set up a calendar for your company softball team, and share it with the whole roster. (Your shortstop will never forget about practice again.) Or share with friends and family so you can view each other’s schedules side by side.

Invitations: Create event invitations, send them to friends, and keep track of people’s responses and comments, all in one place. Your friends can receive your invitation and post responses even if they don’t use Google Calendar themselves.

Quick Add: Click anywhere on your calendar where an event belongs (or use the Quick Add link), and start typing. Google Calendar understands whole phrases like “Brunch with mom at Java Cafe 11am on Saturday,” and will pop new events right into your agenda.

Gmail Integration: Add your friend’s Super Bowl party to your calendar without ever leaving your Gmail inbox. Gmail now recognizes events mentioned in emails.

Search: Find the date of the Baxter family BBQ (you knew it was sometime this summer). Or, search public calendars to discover new events you’re interested in and add them to your own calendar.

Mobile Access: Receive event reminders and notifications on your mobile phone.

Event Publishing: Share your organization’s events with the world. Learn more with our
