Quick! Out of the Box Reviews feature short, quick reviews of new music that has just come out of the jewel case, or “the box”. These are “first impression” reviews after just a listen or two, and will help the reader immediately identify a new release that is worthy of a purchase.
We have two Quick! Out of the Box Reviews for you today!
First…
Storyside B “Everything and More” (02/28/06)

Get it today! Catchy melodic hooks, clean harmonies over fiery electric lead guitar and bass driven rock. The acoustic guitar is prominent throughout, laying down chords and carrying the rhythm in synch with the drums. Storyside B covers the gamut of solid rock tunes with an almost stadium-anthem sound, to softer ballads that are led by piano, solo voice and occasional well-placed accompanying harmony vocals. Good stuff!
- lead off single: “Miracle” – excellent tune and lyrics that make you consider the miracle in your own hands.
- standout track: “Everything and More” – title track that kick starts the album. I was hooked immediately by the lyric “What do you live for? Is it something to stand for?”
Next up…
Mainstay “Well Meaning Fiction” (02/21/06)

No rush. This CD has some charm and appeal, with an adult rock sound that finds a “groove” and tempo that sits there throughout the disc. There are lyrics that challenge believers and non-believers alike, but there is no real “new sound” or variety, every song sounds similar to me. This will probably appeal mostly to fans of Kutless, with slow tempos and augmented melodic notes. At times I can hear an Anberlin influence and to me, they have a Dishwalla-esque sound; a melodic, guitar and piano, adult soft rock sound and led with smooth male lead vocal. There is nothing bad about this disc, just nothing leaps out from the disc. It’s a good debut and it will be interesting to watch these guys and look for them to develop a their “niche”.
- fav track: “Well Meaning Fiction” – title track that challenges the church’s failure to be a viable force in “saving” people because it waters down the gospel so as not to offend.
- The smooth, calming vocal and quiet soft-rock sound make this CD good to listen to after a stressful day at work.
